May 2012: Unmatchable

SK has known Kath for years & the two have always been a like-minded duo.  They share a similar, dry sense of humor, fair freckled skin, a love of doubles tennis, a fervor for languages, venturing to strange, distant lands, cold drinks & controversy.  From an early age, they stood out as being similar, as outsiders, as rebels (see Swim Team photo & female members in mismatched suits).  Their friendship blossomed in high school as they laughed & critiqued their way through different teachers, classes & friends, bad parties, mountain adventures (think snowbank crash) & tennis matches.  Kath & SK went their separate ways after a 1997 graduation & the 15 years following, only to reunite for brief stints whenever SK returned home to visit Denver.

This May, the two chums reunited again, here in Portland where Kath had never been.  Their time together was full of characteristic jokes, memories, new observations & conversations littered with foreign language accents as well as stupid phrases made up in high school.  Kath introduced SK to Words With Friends while testing her vocabulary of Spanish internal organs & coaching her on how to start her own tutoring/translation business.  SK made Kath ride a bike, eat lunch at a food cart & sell earrings at a poorly advertised Craft Sale on Mother's Day.  Kath treated SK to dinners & drinks in return for a bed, the passenger seat & very ill-informed lessons on Pacific Northwest flora & fauna.  They talked about friendship, romance & the intricacies of keeping relationships alive, thriving & real as time consumes us all.

Kath: May our thoughts always be bold, our suits unmatched, our words wise, our reunions frequent & our friendship ever so special.

Yours,
SK

Thanks...I especially like the one of the receipt & hand. Just chance it turned out so well (in my opinion). And that makes me love film even more.

Whatever I can say in response to this beautiful tribute, SK says it better. Our friendship through the years has been among my life's great joys. There is no closing to our conversations, no end to our shared connections, and may it always be so.

Te quiero locamente, comadre.

A few ideas (none that good) for titles for the shot of SK at the Japanese Garden:

"Who's that Japanese garden gnome?"

"Get Fuzzy: that's why SK takes the photos"

"Too lovely to hide behind the camera"

"Prettier than a Japanese Maple"

"Japanese lawn ornament"

HA, HA!!! You are my FAVORITE linguist; the sport you play best is words, you look stunning in sentences.

Your Japanese Garden picture is already well-known, comadre, it's already made history.

Didn't know you had a blog, just briefly looked at it but can't wait to spend more time reading and looking at your wonderful photographs. I admire your philosophy and dedication to film.

Thanks Liz! For me, it's all about the process.
